About PSSS

Picture
Penn South/Mutual Redevelopment Houses in the Chelsea area of New York City is a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC). When Penn South Social Services began in 1986, our major concern was Penn South’s older population (our largest and most vulnerable group). To help seniors to live independently in their homes, we developed comprehensive on-site social and health services never before available in housing cooperatives.

To learn more about NORCs, visit The Future of the NORC-Supportive Service Program by Fredda Vladeck and Anita Altman, and The New York NORC-Supportive Service Program by Anita Altman.

PSSS Programs

  • With the establishment of Penn South Social Services (PSSS), the Penn South Co-op Board of Directors funded Penn South Program for Seniors (PSPS) to help address the social services needs of older adults in the community. PSPS assists nearly 1,200 individuals and their families each year with case management, case assistance, healthcare assistance and management, health promotion, comprehensive group programs, and ancillary services.
  • With the creation of Penn South Home Organized Personal Services (PS-HOPS), for a minimal fee, residents can join a buying club offering discount prices for eyeglasses, hearing aids, home health services, and legal assistance, and more.
  • Programs for All was developed for the entire Penn South community. Programs for All's music performances, writing and exercise classes, movies and readings, and community events bring residents together for recreation and personal development.

Penn South Social Services is able to fund Penn South Program for Seniors, Programs for All, and PS-HOPS with generous support from:
  • Private donors and contributions from the Penn South community
  • Mutual Redevelopment Houses, Inc (also known as Penn South Co-op)
  • New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA)
  • New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA)
  • UJA Federation of New York
  • 21st ILGWU Century Heritage Fund
  • Richard N. Gottfried, NY State Assemblyman, District 75
  • Mark Levine, Manhattan Borough President
  • Erik Bottcher, Councilmember 3rd District, Manhattan
  • The Gerald and Daphna Cramer Foundation
