Financial Support

  • If your work hours and income have or will be affected by the COVID-19 emergency, you can learn about PUA benefits by visiting the COVID-19 New York Scenarios & Benefits page of The Legal Aid Society.
  • The Housing Conservation Coordinator offers legal services (sliding scale by income) for seniors. Call 212-541-5996 to make an appointment.

Tax Preparation

  • IRS Free Self-File (regardless of income)
  • IRS Authorized IRS e-file Providers near Penn South (fees may apply)
  • AARP has a Tax-Aide Program for seniors. Call 888-227-7669 for information.
  • AARP also recommends 
  • The Food Bank of New York is offering free tax preparation services. Call 212-566-7855 for details.
  • ARIVA offers sliding-scale (by income) tax preparation. Call 212-217-6424 for details.
  • The New York City Department of Consumer & Worker Protection is urging New Yorkers to use NYC's Free (according to income) Tax Preparation services with IRS certified VITA/TCE volunteers who will prepare returns for filers or assist filers in preparing their own returns online. Call 800-290-7189 for details.

Legal Support

Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) continues to offer free legal assistance to low-income seniors and veterans age sixty and over to help you with:
  • Last Will & Testament
  • Power of Attorney
  • Health Care Proxy
  • Landlord-Tenant Issues
  • Access to Benefits
  • General Civil Legal Advice and Referrals
  • Veterans can request to speak with an attorney by sending or leaving a message with your name, phone number and best times to return your call by emailing J. Penkoff or calling 347-521-5725. Non-Veterans can request to speak with an attorney by sending or leaving a message with your name, phone number and best times to return your call by emailing  Peter Kempner or calling 347-521-5704.

The New York Legal Assistant Group (NYLAG) has set up a COVID-19 Legal Resource Hotline at 929-356-9482. Call Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and leave your name, the best number to reach you, and a short description of your issue. 

Raphan Law ​offers free legal consultations and is a participating vendor in the PS-HOPS discount program. Call 212-268-8200 to make your appointment.
